Progenitor of The Eclectic Magazine, begun in 1819, and assuming The Museum name in 1822. Founder Eliakim Littell and his brother Squier "were able, by judicious selection from the English magazines and reviews, and by the use of engraved portraits in each number, to achieve popularity for their periodical. The plates, which came to be a priced feature of the magazine, began in 1827, but were not published regularly until 1830; they added much to the attractiveness of the periodical. For some time there were a series of portraits chargées in outline by Keenan." - Frank Luther Mott; A History of American Magazines : 1741-1850, volume I, page 307.
