Emma Service Lester Chase was formerly a Methodist missionary in China; her husband, the Poe expert and author, Professor Lewis Nathaniel Chase, is the dedicatee "Himself". Together, this unprepared and inexperienced couple had an eventful journey through rural Brittany, experiencing Breton culture, while living the Bohemian life.
