Contains primarily pictorial tributes to leading women in the Purple Cross Nurses and the women's Temples, along with substantial advertising documenting black businesses. The black Elks were a fraternal organization that took a leading role in the civil rights movement, and the women's organizations within were largely co-equal, rather than secondary, in their roles and influence. The Purple Cross Nurses trained in first aid and supported public health work in the African-American community.
