Slight wear. Crisp hardcover.; 249 illustrations on 62 plates. "... the Arcerianus A, with its pen drawings and colored miniatures, ranks as our earliest illustrated surveying corpus. Although somewhat fragmentary, it enjoys special status due to its age, the richness of its illustrations, and, to be sure, its rarity as an artistic product of its type. ... However, the considerable scholarly interest in the manuscript has all but ignore its many artistic inclusions. The miniatures and drawings have never received proper iconographic identification, and their importance as possible indicators of the manuscript's date, place of origin, and prototypal form has never been satisfactorily examined. Nor have these illustration, unlike their texts, been compared systematially to those of other illustrated surveying manuscripts. For these reasons, the art historical problems pertaining to the Codex Arcerianus A, especially as regard its miniatures, drawings, and scribal decorations, will be the primary concern of this study." - Introduction. ; Outstanding Dissertations In The Fine Arts; iii, 267, pl pages.
