Solid hardcover. ; Classic Napoleonic-era travel account by English artist Sir Robert Ker Porter, outlining his years as Historical Painter to the Tsar of Russia. Sadly, the first American edition does not offer his illustrations as contained in the first, English, edition. The book covers his extended stay, during which Porter fell in love with a Russian princess, had to go into exile in Sweden due Russia's alliance with Napoleon, and after an extended time in the Swedish court returned to England. He later went on to join Sir John Moore's expedition in the Peninsula War before returning to Russia and marrying his princess in 1811.
