Radical preacher William Winterbotham, convicted of seditious sermons sympathetic to the French Revolution, shared his Newgate prison suite with bookseller/publisher James Ridgway, where he wrote this book. Preceding the 1797 official account by George Staunton, Winterbotham's account of the futile results of Britain's first diplomatic mission to China, Lord Macartney's 1793 Embassy to the Qianlong Emperor, was an indirect attack to embarrass the Pitt government that had imprisoned him. In the absence of any diplomatic trade agreements, the East India Company and Britain struggled to find means to balance its trade with China, eventually turning to opium. Altogether an interesting late 18th-century survey of China, subtly influenced by British politics and the French Revolution. ; [10], 435, [1], 114 pages.
