Library REBIND, library stamps/marks/labels/pocket, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover.; Antonio Gallenga was an Italian author, journalist and supporter of the Risorgimento. In 1836 he sailed to the United States, where he settled in Boston and mixed with the Italian American community and leading American authors such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and William H Prescott. Apparently after failing to get become a professor of Italian at Harvard, in 1839 he moved to England, where he had a full life involved in Italian politics, newspaper journalism for the Times of London, writer using the pseudonym Luigi Mariotti, and extensive travel to cover various global events such as the American Civil War. An interesting autobiography covering 1836-1880 by a vibrant if opinionated writer. This American edition, published a year after its London debut in two volumes, combines both into a single volume of interesting recollections. ; Ex-Library; xii, 466, 2 ad pages.
