Library stamps/marks/labels/pocket, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover.; "One of the two main themes of this disseration is the study of these paintings in relationship to hospital patronage. This includes a thorough examination of evidence concerning the operation and structure of the hospital, the hospital patronage, the individual donors, and a study of the devotional function of the paintings in relationship to the religious life and health care in the hospital. To understand the paintings as devotional images, both meaning and composition are investigated and compared to artistic prototypes. This leads to the second theme of the dissertation: Memlinc's relationship to earlier pictorial tradition, especially Rogier van der Weyden, and the question of dependency and innovation. Three of the four works painted for the hospital bear an unmistakable resemblance to compositions by Rogier van der Weyden, who is usually considered Memlinc's master. .... Since twentieth century critics have considered Memlinc's work unoriginal and have disparaged his historical and critical importance because of his debt to Rogier van der Weyden, there paintings make excellent test cases to examine the relationship of Memlinc's work to his predecessors. I propose to go directly to the heart of the matter by comparing the Rogerian and other prototypes with Memlinc's "imitative" work in order to identify Memlinc's unique contributions." - Introduction. 85 pages of illustrations.
